You can get a better sound for "Deadlines" by tuning your guitar down a half step or more. The recorded version is down a whole step, give or take -- I think this has something to do with either the presence of so many pitch-altering effects like whammy, pitchshifter, etc., Som's production style, or simply a Beatles "Revolution"-esque whim to tune just randomly somewhere in between. Anyway, if you're going to play along to the record, you'll probably have to modify your tuning slightly to play along in tune.

Also, instead of straight power chords, use Am and chime the top two open strings and play the next two chords in a power chord shape moved up a string (with the root note on the D string):

intro/main riff
d|--------------0--------0-------0-------0-------0-------5-----5~~|
A|-----1--------0--------0-------0-------0-------0-------5-----5~~|
F|-----2-0----4---4----5---5---5---5---4---4---4---4-----5-----5~~|
C|---2---0--2--------3-------3-------2-------2---------7---7---7~~|
G|-0-------------------------------------------------5---------5~~|
D|----------------------------------------------------------------|

Then if you have a whammy, strum that Am chord and shift the pitch up an octave and then back down.

My full tab is at: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/m/my_vitriol/deadlines_tab.htm

That site with the gear is helpful even if it turns out to be incorrect. I knew listening to Between the Lines/Finelines that they HAD to be using some sort of whammy, pitchshifter, ring modulator weirdo effect to achieve those tones... don't know if I'll try retuning my guitar to mostly G# anytime soon, but enlightening, in any case.

Cheers.

i think pretty much every song uses it, thats why i reckon theyre fucked if they ever lose the pedal.
