Hey guys, for the guitarists on this board, I was hoping I could get some advice !

I have a Laney VC30 amp and it seems to do this weird thing whereby when i'm playing guitar the amp starts making this humming noise and it starts to get louder and louder and then the volume dies and I am just playing an unplugged guitar !! What I generally do is turn the amp off because I get a bit worried about what will happen. So I turn it on a few minutes later and sometimes its fine and I carry on as normal and other times it comes back but eventually turning it on and off, it sorts itself out ! I know there aren't many of us on this site but I was hoping someone had some ideas ???

Thankies

Hey man, I've found this web-site to be very helpful when it comes to figuring out valve amp problems:

http://www.geofex.com/ampdbug/ampdebug.htm

To be honest, because valve amps are fragile beasts (sound incredible mind you), any number of things could be wrong with it. It could be failing tubes, or it could be something else. Either way, I'd recommend that you source out a local tech and see if you can get it to him or her. If it's something as simple as a tube replacement, you'll still need to get the amp biased to suit the new tubes, so a trip to the tech looks like the best option to me.

Hope that helps!

Also, before shelling out for a tech, make sure all the small things are not to blame such as bad cables, etc. I'd recommend getting another guitar cable and plugging straight into the amp ignoring any FX etc. If the problem disappears, then you can narrow it down to something outside of your amp.

Thanks very much for all the info and i shall check out that link to see if i can find out the problem.

Also i forgot to mention another problem that it has, bloody tube amps !

So this problem is, its a two channel amp and now and again, not every time i play like the other problem but now and again the gain channel light flickers on and off and i lose volume like on the other problem. It doesnt make sense how the gain light would flicker on and off etc because with this amp you actually have to press the switch on the amp which i dont go near. So its strange.

I think my amp needs therapy Laughing Sad

Knowing next to nothing about amps, it sounds like a power problem, things flickering out and losing volume.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. I'd probably just take it to a tech; even if it is a minor problem, it's good to get these things serviced now and again. If you live in Scotland (slim chance), you should check out a guy called Dennis Marshall - he's incredible and very well priced.
